2011 Merit Award for Preservation given to McGarrah Jessee Building

The Heritage Society of Austin recognized the McGarrah Jessee Building (originally named the American National Bank Building) with a Merit Award for Preservation Award.

The first major example of Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Austin, the building was renovated by McKinney York Architects in 2010. At the center of the project is a polished two-level atrium characterized by marble columns and terrazzo floors, honoring the original modern architecture and Florence Knoll-designed interiors. Surrounding spaces maintain clean finishes, but at the perimeter, they peel back to reveal raw concrete and informal workstation areas adapting to the creative and freewheeling personality of the client.

The 51st Annual Preservation Merit Awards Celebration will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011, 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the The Driskill Hotel. Tickets are $100 per guest

McKinney York Architects made Austin Monthly Home’s 2011 Hot List. A local design panel selected the McGarrah Jessee Building as the “Hottest Commercial Design.” The project is featured in the Austin Monthly Home Fall Issue on newsstands now.

2011 Homes Tour

McKinney York Architects will participate in the 2011 AIA Austin Homes Tour. The Cuernavaca Residence at 403 Lisa Drive was recently selected to be a part of the self-guided tour! The 25th annual Homes Tour is slated for Saturday, October 1 – Sunday, October 2.

2011 Citation of Honor Award

Friday night, McKinney York Architects accepted an AIA Austin Citation of Honor Award for the McGarrah Jessee Building. The awards were presented at the Celebrate Design! event held at the Blanton Museum.

Jurors described the McGarrah Jessee building as “a great example of restraint and subtle composition.” The jury included Anne Fougeron, FAIA of Fougeron Architecture (San Francisco), Scott Merrill, AIA, of Merrill, Pastor & Colgan (Vero Beach, FL); and, Trey Trahan, FAIA of Trahan Architects (Baton Rouge, LA).

Texas Union Courtyard receives 2010 ASLA Honor Award

The Texas Union Courtyard at the University of Texas at Austin received a 2010 Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects, Texas Chapter, representing the best in Texas landscape architecture. The renovation creates a welcoming outdoor dining space while maintaining itself as a pedestrian thouroughfare. McKinney York Architects collaborated with Coleman & Associates.

Heather McKinney to Juror at the 2010 Topping Out Awards

Heather McKinney juries the North Dakota AIA Design Awards
