McKinney York Architects made Austin Monthly Home’s 2011 Hot List. A local design panel selected the McGarrah Jessee Building as the “Hottest Commercial Design.” The project is featured in the Austin Monthly Home Fall Issue on newsstands now.

Chapel Groundbreaking

Texas Tech University broke ground on the Kent R. Hance Chapel, named in honor of it’s primary donor. Mr. Hance is a 1965 graduate and former faculty member of Texas Tech University. The 6,879 square-foot chapel was designed by McKinney York Architects in Austin, Texas. Al York, a principal with the firm, was formerly an assistant professor in the Texas Tech University College of Architecture. “The overall features of the chapel are going to be beautiful, and it fits perfectly with the Spanish Renaissance architecture our campus is known for,” said Hance, who has been involved with design plans for the building.

African American Center on KXAN

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day brings the new African American Cultural Center a step closer to East Austin. The historic Dedrick-Hamilton House, home of the first freed slave in Travis County, cements the Cultural Center amongst the new residences and businesses along East 11th Street. Read more on KXAN.

Starr Building gets new name

The Starr Building, now called the McGarrah Jessee Building is featured in this week’s edition of Austin Business Journal.

“The near-finished building is a beautiful and painstakingly restored example of modern architecture. Built in 1954, the building was on the Preservation Texas’ 2010 list of Most Endangered Places Statewide.

Kemp [Management, Inc], which tapped McKinney York Architects of Austin for the project, preserved a giant mural in the building by renowned artist Seymour Fogel, who painted it for then American National Bank to highlight the modernist architecture of the new building.” Read the full article at ABJ.

Filming for HGTV begins

Constant Springs will be featured on HGTV’s Bang for Your Buck, a television show which compares the remodeling choices of three homeowners from the same city who have renovated the same room with the same budget. Filming begins November 10 and the episode will air during the 2011 season. Details to follow.
