A new book, Houses Made of Wood and Light, about Architect Hank Schubart is now available for purchase. Long-standing clients of McKinney York, Michele Dunkerley and Jane Hickey explore the work of American architect Hank Schubart, and his influence on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. Heather McKinney, FAIA provided the Afterward.

The book is available from University of Texas Press, Amazon, and Chapters.

McKinney York Architects Announces New Associate

McKinney York Architects is pleased to announce our newest Associate: Travis Lucy, AIA. After joining the firm in 2008, Travis has effectively guided several projects from programming and conceptual design through construction administration and close-out, including large institutional projects like the Ministry Activity Center at Lake Travis United Methodist Church. He presently is overseeing the construction at the Jackson School of Geosciences on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Travis demonstrates the quality of leadership and work ethic embodied by the spirit of our firm: to craft beautiful, responsible architecture in a culture of creative collaboration. ‘Striking a Balance’ Panel

This weekend at the 2011 TSA Convention, Heather McKinney participated in a panel discussion entitled “Striking Career, Family and Life Balance.” She was joined by Val Glitsch, FAIA of Houston, Betsy del Monte, FAIA from The Beck Group, and Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA from Richter Architects. Together they spoke of overcoming the challenge of life/practice issues of being a female architect.

2011 Merit Award for Preservation given to McGarrah Jessee Building

The Heritage Society of Austin recognized the McGarrah Jessee Building (originally named the American National Bank Building) with a Merit Award for Preservation Award.

The first major example of Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Austin, the building was renovated by McKinney York Architects in 2010. At the center of the project is a polished two-level atrium characterized by marble columns and terrazzo floors, honoring the original modern architecture and Florence Knoll-designed interiors. Surrounding spaces maintain clean finishes, but at the perimeter, they peel back to reveal raw concrete and informal workstation areas adapting to the creative and freewheeling personality of the client.

The 51st Annual Preservation Merit Awards Celebration will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011, 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the The Driskill Hotel. Tickets are $100 per guest

McKinney York Architects made Austin Monthly Home’s 2011 Hot List. A local design panel selected the McGarrah Jessee Building as the “Hottest Commercial Design.” The project is featured in the Austin Monthly Home Fall Issue on newsstands now.

Chapel Groundbreaking

Texas Tech University broke ground on the Kent R. Hance Chapel, named in honor of it’s primary donor. Mr. Hance is a 1965 graduate and former faculty member of Texas Tech University. The 6,879 square-foot chapel was designed by McKinney York Architects in Austin, Texas. Al York, a principal with the firm, was formerly an assistant professor in the Texas Tech University College of Architecture. “The overall features of the chapel are going to be beautiful, and it fits perfectly with the Spanish Renaissance architecture our campus is known for,” said Hance, who has been involved with design plans for the building.

Public Invitation to Groundbreaking

The groundbreaking ceremony for the African American Heritage and Cultural Facility will coincide with the City of Austin’s Juneteenth Celebration. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. This project includes restoration of the historic Dedrick-Hamilton House and a new construction facility designed by McKinney York. Wear comfortable shoes!
