Lake Travis UMC Ministry Activity Center
Lake Travis United Methodist Church, Austin, Texas
Through community interviews and surveys, McKinney York developed a plan to address the desires of a growing congregation as they focused on increasing family membership and community outreach programs. This new 15,000 square foot family life center represents the initial phase of a campus expansion master plan. The Ministry Activity Center will accommodate youth education and athletic programs, a banquet space with a commercial kitchen, and a venue for alternative worship services and special performances. The building is sited and designed to complement the existing facilities, preserve existing trees and views, and to allow for future expansion. Entry to the building is through an elegant lobby, accented by double-height limestone and glass walls. A large roof overhang at the front of the building serves to extend the lobby, allowing for shaded outdoor gathering.Sustainable initiatives include: reduced energy and water consumption through use of proper solar orientation of building, large roof overhangs, high-efficiency heat-recovery air conditioning system, energy-efficient fluorescent light fixtures, water-efficient restroom plumbing fixtures, and native drought tolerant landscaping; rainwater collection for irrigation.
