About

Canadian Cottage

Ontario, Canada

Set between woods and water, this house replaced a dilapidated cottage built eighty years ago by the owner's parents. The openness of the plan and the shapes of the rooms exude the casual, simple lifestyle of a summer home. This sense of airiness is further reinforced by the oversized windows and multiple entries. The new home was designed to fit the beautiful furniture built by the owner's father for the original cottage. It is further anchored to its heritage and place by the use of a green & white color scheme, a classic combination in this lake district of Ontario.

1992 AIA Austin Merit Design Award
The original cottage had great sentimental value for the client and the new cottage respects that sense of nostalgia and desire for a sustainable environment by recycling and incorporating materials from the old house. Sustainable initiatives include: reuse of old stones from the fireplace, murals from the walls, and painted rugs from the floorboards.
