Project Details

Located on a Gulf Coast barrier island, this beach house is an expression of the dynamic forces that shape the coastline. The design takes inspiration from the formation of the sand dunes and their sculpting and erosion by wind and water. The ever-changing forms create shelter for the diverse animal and plant life found on the beaches. The design draws on these forms by creating a language of an “outer” barrier and “inner” shelter. The form of the beach house pushes out to connect with the land and water and pulls in to create shelter for those staying within.
This three-story seven-bedroom house is designed for multiple families to vacation together with indoor and outdoor spaces for gathering on each floor. A separate guest house above the garage provides a sanctuary from the main house with additional accommodations. The house’s sharp geometry and materiality carefully accommodates the traditional architectural guidelines of the planned community where it resides while creating a fresh modern aesthetic for the beach.
